1. LITTLE EDEN started in May 1967 as a day care centre in the Edenvale Methodist Church Hall, caring for three little girls.
2. The first financial donation received was R10.
3. The organisation moved 15 times in nine years before settling at the current Edenvale Home.
4. We now have two 24-hour care centres – Domitilla and Danny Hyams Home in Edenvale and Elvira Rota Village in Bapsfontein, named after Domitilla’s mother.
5. Each Home has its own chapel – Our Lady of the Angels Chapel in Edenvale and the Holy Family Chapel at Elvira Rota Village.
6. A total of 300 children and adults live permanently at LITTLE EDEN.
7. Since 1967 more than 1 000 children have lived here.
8. Our oldest resident has lived at LITTLE EDEN for 35 years.
9. Two thirds of our residents need customised wheelchairs and/or specialised seating.
10. Every day we wash 3 tons of linen and 2 500 nappies.
11. LITTLE EDEN receives positive feedback from the Department of Health annual audits.
12. We enjoy continuous support from our circle of loyal and generous donors.
13. The founders, Danny and Domitilla Hyams, received numerous local and international awards for their outstanding work and vision for people with intellectual disability.
14. Many staff have long service records in excess of 20 years.
15. Letters of appreciation and congratulatory phone calls from visitors, community representatives, volunteers and parents confirm the value of our work.
