Looking at the joyful picture of Vukahle, it’s inspiring to witness the effort and determination it takes for him to master simple movements like beating a drum or setting the music chimes tinkling.
Vukahle has severe cerebral palsy, and battles to control his muscles and the movement of his arms and legs. Instead of being able to reach out smoothly to grasp something, his arms move uncontrollably, leading to intense frustration and a lack of self confidence.
Regular sessions with our physiotherapist have helped strengthen Vukahle’s core muscles, giving him a sturdy foundation for development in other areas.
Music therapy has also inspired his determination to control his movements. Being able to reach out and bang the drum in time to the music, and create pleasant sounds by reaching out to the chimes, might not seem like a huge achievement. But this newfound ability has done wonders for Vukahle’s confidence. He’s now able to take the lead when we sing and play musical instruments, encourage his peers, and even explore his creativity by making up his own tunes.
Best of all, these skills have spilled over into Vukahle’s daily life.
He now connects to his caregivers and friends in a more meaningful way. And that makes for a happier young boy.
