Multotec HR director, Michael Budynkiewics, is the latest participant in our Wheelchair Challenge. His wheelchair was delivered the day before the challenge, and he immediately wondered how he would cope.
At 7.25am on 29 March, he sat in the chair for the first time. At first, it felt comfortable and he thought everything would be fine.
“But then I had to maneuver myself through the small office door, clearly not meant for an individual in a wheelchair,” he says.
“I got through with some injury to my one hand, fortunately not too serious. It is also not easy to move on the office carpet, and I must admit that I had a good workout for the day!
“My biggest challenge though was trying to use the restroom, which was actually impossible to do. I had to cheat to do the necessary and I immediately realised how lucky I am that I could do that, and how awful it must be to an individual bound to a wheelchair all his/her life in such a situation.
“I have to say that I have a new found respect and admiration for all disabled persons, and realise that much more must be done at our workplace to cater for wheelchair users.”
Thanks again to Michael and all the other brave participants who accepted the LITTLE EDEN Wheelchair Challenge.
