When you care for children and adults affected by profound intellectual disability, you accept that there are many things they don’t understand.
You learn to listen, even when they can’t speak. And you pick up when they are frightened, uncomfortable or unwell.
Because, they don’t understand when they’re coming down with a cold or flu … why their nose is blocked or they can’t breathe easily … or why their tummy hurts. Many of them are unable to cough properly, or blow out through their noses. Owing to their limited mobility, they are prone to respiratory difficulties and constipation.
They don’t understand any of those words or what they mean. They just know they feel awful. And they depend on us to make things better. That’s why, with 300 children and adults in our care, we need a well filled medicine cupboard!
With winter approaching, we’re hoping good people like you will help stock the shelves of our new medical wing with cough and cold remedies, nasal spray, multivitamin syrup, laxatives and anti diarrhoea meds, probiotics and other remedies suitable for adults, children and babies. These are essentials we simply can’t do without. But unfortunately, they are not covered by the funding we receive from the Department of Health. It’s up to us to find the money.
And, while a single small bottle of cough medicine or laxative doesn’t cost more than R50 to R100, multiply that by the number of doses our nursing staff administer during a single month, and you’ll understand why we need your help.
Please consider making a donation towards this crucial need now. Your gift of R150, R250, R500 or any other amount you can spare will help us reach our target of R55 000 to cover essential medical supplies this winter.
And just to show how serious we are about meeting this target, our CEO, Xelda Rohrbeck and former staff member Carl Rohrbeck are literally putting their heads on a block! They’ve accepted the challenge to perm their hair if we raise R55 000 before the end of April. So please join in and make your contribution online now.
You can give by credit/debit card, instant EFT or make a direct deposit into our bank account. Please include the word ‘PERM’ in the beneficiary reference.
Thank you for helping to keep our special angels safe and well in the months ahead.
