Over 30 years ago, Domitilla Hyams (founder of LITTLE EDEN) and Peter Rohrbeck (Facilities Supervisor) planted 400 pecan nut trees at Elvira Rota Village. Her vision was to create an income stream for the organisation, whilst giving residents the opportunity to be involved in the process.
Today the orchard yields around 4 tons of nuts per annum. Although residents are not involved in maintaining the orchard, some help to pick up fallen nuts and pack the shelled nuts ready for sale. They enjoy picnicking in the shade and have planted an extra 85 trees!
Pecan nuts can be purchased from our offices at 79 Wagenaar Street, Edenglen at R215 per kg or R110 for 500g.
