It’s time to celebrate the wonderful women who raised us

 

Those who provided unconditional love … cared for us day in and day out … sat beside us when we were sick or afraid … cheered us on and believed in us, celebrating our successes and lifting us up when we failed. Those who ‘mothered’ us – even if they weren’t our real mothers.

 

Loving someone else’s child … especially a child with profound intellectual disability … requires an exceptionally big heart. Like the one that beats within Sebenzile’s chest.

 

love & careBefore she came to LITTLE EDEN, Sebenzile says that she had never encountered such vulnerability. “But amidst the tears, I discovered a wellspring of compassion within me, ignited by the residents’ resilience and spirit.”

 

Sebenzile is just one of 232 dedicated nurses and care workers – who spend their days making sure that every one of the special angels at LITTLE EDEN knows the touch of a mother’s love.

 

Just like the women who raised us, these ‘mothers’ bath and dress the residents every day. They feed them and brush their teeth and change their nappies. But they also give them plenty of hugs, and smiles, and cheerful chatter to let them know they matter.

 

And as we make plans to celebrate our own moms, let’s not forget these exceptional women and the very special role they play in both our Homes.

OUR HOMES

LITTLE EDEN has two residential homes, providing 24-hour care for children and adults with profound intellectual disability – Domitilla and Danny Hyams Home in Edenglen, suitable for younger and more severely disabled children, and Elvira Rota Village, a farm in Bapsfontein ideally suited to those who are more mobile, older or higher functioning.

MEET THE CHILDREN

Sindi has severe intellectual disability caused by birth complication. She was admitted to LITTLE EDEN when she was 7 years old as her mother, who works full time, is unable to provide the care she needs.

Although she cannot speak, Sindi understands much of what is said to her and she is eager to learn. She has a lovely, gentle nature, and is always smiling.

PLACEMENTS

LITTLE EDEN caters for people with profound intellectual disability – those who are classified as uneducable – of all races and creeds. Priority is given to those who have been abandoned or abused, or who come from severely disadvantaged backgrounds. Once accepted into the LITTLE EDEN family, they remain with us for life.

VOLUNTEER

Students wishing to do community service at LITTLE EDEN should note that community service hours may only be accumulated during weekdays, from 08:30 to 12:30. Afternoons, weekends and public holidays are NOT available. School holidays are ideal. Please contact Nichollette Zulu on 011 609 7246 to make arrangements.
